About the Nicosia Master Plan
The Nicosia Master Plan (NMP) is an initiative launched in the late 1970s, aiming to improve living conditions and establish a shared vision for the city’s development.
Following agreements reached in 1978 and 1979, and with the contribution of a multidisciplinary team established in 1981, a flexible urban planning strategy was developed, initially focusing on Greater Nicosia and later on the historic city centre.
A key priority of the plan is the revitalisation of the historic core of the city, which, despite its significant cultural value, has been affected by physical deterioration and socio-economic challenges. The NMP promotes an integrated approach, including housing rehabilitation, preservation of historic buildings, and the strengthening of commercial activity.
Major interventions include pedestrianisation schemes, the regeneration of underutilised neighbourhoods, and targeted urban actions that enhance the city’s cohesion and functionality.
Overall, the Nicosia Master Plan stands as a long-term example of strategic urban planning, contributing to the revitalisation of Nicosia’s city centre and the shaping of a more sustainable urban future.
